Rediscovering Mid-Century Modern

The Mid-Century Modern movement, which ushered in a wave of innovation in the design world from the 1940s to the 1960s, holds a special place in history. EDITORA is revisiting that remarkable era by capturing the essence of the times created by visionaries, reimagining the products, and sharing them with the world.

These elements come to life through the expertise of Japan's top craftsmen. EDITORA aims to rekindle a connection with Mid-Century Modern design in the contemporary world.

CRAFTSMANSHIP

Crafting Complex Artistic Forms
Through Welding

Gentle curves and dynamic bends; the frames and legs in EDITORA’s metal tables and chairs are the result of welding. Creating unified forms with such a finish is challenging and requires an artistry only achievable through skilled craftsmanship. These techniques culminate in unique structures and designs, solidifying EDITORA’s distinctive character. The hands of artisans create intricate shapes that machines cannot replicate–metal rods that appear to be one form are sometimes achieved by welding bent and straight sections, bringing them together into a single shape. Through welding together several parts, shapes that machines cannot bend transform into unexpectedly beautiful forms. The ability to envision three-dimensionally from flat drawings, determine the precise placement of each element, and gather suitable materials from specialized factories, culminates in the final form of each product. EDITORA’s furniture stands as the epitome of thoughtful, non-conventional design and represents the pinnacle of Japan’s finest craftsmanship.

Sculpting Through Knowledge and Experience:
The Nuanced Sensibilities of Artisans

Characterized by organic, plump curves, our sofas and chairs are brought to life using a traditional method that starts with crafting a wooden frame inside the structure, rather than the mass-produced method of mold shaping. The ability to envision three-dimensional beauty from two-dimensional blueprints is a craft mastered by artisans, relying on their accumulated sensibilities and experience. They collaboratively bring unseen dimensions to life, considering angles, textural nuances of curves, overall volume, and the impression they create. The process involves forming urethane blocks from scratch, transforming the act into a sculptural endeavor. Completing this creative journey involves cutting and meticulously applying fabric to the seat and back, resulting in the final form of EDITORA’s distinctive furniture. What sets this process apart is the presence of artisans who push their expertise and innovative ideas rather than relying on machines. Exposure to the world’s highest quality furniture, absorption of various cultures through design, fashion, architecture, and music, and the sensibilities of artisans. All these aspects, plus the classical methods established in the 1950s are bridged by EDITORA’s philosophy and the top-tier craftsmanship in Japan today.

Handpicked Natural Wood Veneers
from Around the World

The surfaces of EDITORA’s tables and cabinets are made of natural wood veneer, a decorative material created by applying thinly sliced wood layers to a base. EDITORA commissions a team with extraordinary dedication and effort to work on this surface material. Their showroom is stocked with handpicked natural wood veneers from not only within the country but around the world, including some materials dating back 4000 years. Veneers that match the product’s envisioned image are chosen from a diverse range of tree species in their stock, and skilled artisans go on to meticulously assemble the materials. The thoughtful pairing of veneers and variations in color aim to maximize the beauty of nature and its unique textures. Each product is meticulously crafted based on thorough conversations, reflecting the team’s commitment to pursuing the perfect match in veneer design, showcasing their high skills and passion. The finished veneer, derived from the precious, beautiful resource of natural wood, becomes a one-of-a-kind piece.

Craftsmanship Meets State-of-the-Art Technology:
EDITORA’s Wooden Chairs

EDITORA’s wooden chair collection is brought to life through the expertise of a team of 20 skilled craftsmen operating within an expansive manufacturing system. These artisans adeptly maneuver a 5-axis NC router to craft furniture with intricate shapes that boast beautiful finishes. This machine controls five axes simultaneously, enabling processing from various angles. This allows for the precise and beautifully machined parts of EDITORA’s uniquely shaped components, such as chair legs, seats, and backs. Achieving this movement requires meticulous numerical settings and programming by the artisans – they anticipate the final form to be cut and translate it into numerical values. After assembling the machined parts, it’s time for the artisans’ manual work. They undertake a series of tasks, from measuring and cutting upholstery to fitting and sewing. This process is their strength and is indispensable for the production of high-quality furniture. EDITORA places trust in the artisans’ skills and passion, resulting in furniture that combines reliability, user-friendliness, and beauty.
