Marcel Gascoin:
A Luminary of
French Mid-Century Design

As a leading furniture designer in mid-20th-century France, Marcel Gascoin played a pivotal role, particularly during the post-war reconstruction era. Gascoin stands as an iconic figure of French Mid-Century design, and his influence endures today. He is also known for being a member of the French Union of Modern Artists (UAM) alongside figures like Le Corbusier, Jean Prouvé, and Charlotte Perriand.

Beginning his career as an architect and interior designer for the French Ministry of Reconstruction and Urbanism, Gascoin dedicated himself to designing and producing furniture to alleviate post-war housing shortages. He established modular storage units and corresponding wooden furniture sets for French households, pursuing a blend of simplicity and functionality.

“C Chair” (1947)

Gascoin’s designs, rooted in functionalism and modernism, are renowned for their clever solutions to efficiently utilize limited spaces. Actively incorporating natural materials, he sought modest yet beautiful forms. His design philosophy centered around the “reconstruction of housing,” proposing ways to maximize space through furniture for comfortable living in urban areas.

One of his particularly renowned creations is the “C Chair.” Lightweight yet sturdy, it showcases a finish that highlights the natural texture of wood. The chair is characterized by its comfortable seat and backrest angle, coupled with its elegant form. Reflecting the context of post-World War II France’s material shortages, the “C Chair” is designed to be used in small spaces, seamlessly blending functionality with beauty.

While inheriting Gascoin’s design philosophy and practicality, EDITORA’s chairs offer a unique interpretation and a modern sensibility, offering products suitable for contemporary living. The enduring influence of the “C Chair“ continues to shape EDITORA’s furniture design, transcending generations.
