POMPOUS COUNTER CHAIR

Royère’s furniture is crafted using traditional methods passed down through generations, eschewing machine production and new materials. This sets it apart from other designers of the time, such as Eames and Eero Saarinen, who embraced materials such as molded plywood and fiberglass. Similarly, EDITORA’s organic and voluptuous curves that express sculptural beauty are hand-shaped with meticulous details by skilled artisans, echoing the artistic elegance reminiscent of Royère’s works.

Jean Royère's Sensibility
Humor and Tradition

Jean Royère, a prominent decorator and designer of 20th-century French Mid-Century furniture, created works with such charisma that they have attained iconic status. Born in Paris in 1902, Royère initially pursued a career as a trader but transitioned to the world of interior design at the age of 29. He honed his skills at the furniture workshops of Faubourg Saint-Antoine, learning the highest craftsmanship techniques passed down in Paris. He quickly asserted his individuality, attracting affluent clients enamored by his free-thinking and elegance. Royère’s clientele expanded internationally, with royalty from the Middle East and South America becoming his patrons, solidifying his illustrious global career.

Royère’s acclaim lies in his distinctive design philosophy and characteristic approach. He prioritized functional value and sensory enjoyment, incorporating humor and approachability. This resulted in interiors that, while seemingly extravagant, created spaces where people could relax and enjoy daily life. His works are known for their innovative shapes, rich colors, and high-quality materials.

“Polar Bear” sofa (1947)

One of his standout creations is the “Polar Bear” sofa, named for its rounded shape and carefully chosen fabric, reminiscent of a polar bear walking on ice in the Arctic. Beyond its striking visual appeal, the large size and vibrant colors provide an exceptionally comfortable seating experience. The “Polar Bear” series has become a symbol of status, beloved by art collectors and celebrities alike. Its enduring popularity attests to the timeless elegance and high craftsmanship of Royère’s designs.

EDITORA’s POMPOUS collection draws inspiration from Royère’s “Polar Bear” series. With oversized and rounded forms, the design approach incorporates humor and playfulness. The organic curves are meticulously crafted by artisans, with the wooden frame assembled based on photographs of the wooden components in Royère’s portfolio. Urethane is skillfully shaped by hand, echoing the sculptural techniques Royère used.
